Soon a neighborhood located in the North-East side of Vienna will become the most intelligent neighborhood in the whole Europe. We’re talking about the Aspern neighbourhood from the Donaustadt district, a place where the Siemens engineers will build a large urban development project that will cover 240 hectares and will host a multifunctional urban district.

<p>&nbsp;</p>

Half of the new urban district will include interconnected power supply units, building systems, intelligent power grids and information and communications technologies for apartments, office buildings, research centers and an educational center.

<p>&nbsp;</p>

The other half is reserved for plazas, parks and recreation areas. Step by step, by 2030 this specific area of Vienna will transform to a city of the future with 20,000 inhabitants and 20,000 new jobs.

<p>&nbsp;</p>

One of the main challenges for this grand project is connecting all the buildings that have different functions to the low-voltage distribution network. In the future the building control systems will manage the energy exchange between the buildings and optimize the energy consumption locally, so that each building operator has the possibility to participate actively on the energy markets.

<p>&nbsp;</p>

The information and communications technologies will evaluate all the centralized data in order to detect any faults in the system, recognize inefficient consumption patterns and offer potential oportunities for energy savings. Moreover the decentralized power generation from renewable energy sources will supply the Aspern’s electrical needs.

<p>&nbsp;</p>

All this multifunctional urban district will be built starting with the 1st of October by Aspern Smart City Research, a dedicated company founded at the beginning of this month by the Siemens Corporate Technology and its partners and has a budget of almost 40 million euro.
